Employee Engagement

managers - the linchpin of employee engagement and productivity

Given the volatile state of the economy these days, many of my coaching clients have been experiencing layoffs (or in corporate-speak "Reductions in Force-RIF.") They may be directly impacted or they may be one of the "left behind." Although their livelihoods are not directly impacted, left-behinders are expected to do their own work and additionally pick up the work of those who were let go.

Workforces are shrinking with expectations rising. Fewer people, more work. Greater output is being asked of each employee. Given this reality, how can managers maintain or increase productivity without burnout and excessive unpaid work-hours?

One of the key predictors of productivity is engagement. Studies have shown that highly engaged employees are 22% more productive at work than non-engaged employees. And, most of that engagement (70%) can be attributed to the employee’s manager. Managers, although not often celebrated, are the linchpins in building productive and engaged employees.

Jim Harter of Gallup Research says - “Engaged employees are more attentive and vigilant. They look out for the needs of their coworkers and the overall enterprise, because they personally ‘own’ the result of their work and that of the organization.”

Managers ensure that employees know what work needs to be done, support and advocate for them when necessary, and connect the employee’s work to the larger organization mission.

Finding ways to create meaning in the workplace and knowing how one's work contributes to the greater whole is key to employees working at the top of their game.

If you're struggling with how to motivate and engage your team, let's talk. Some simple strategies can make a big difference. https://venture-you.com
