Empathy is probably one of the most important leadership qualities of our time. Actually, it’s one of the most important HUMAN qualities of our time. And every day it’s evident that it’s sorely lacking.
em.pa.thy 1: the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner – Merriam Webster
I just finished reading Applied Empathy: The New Language of Leadership by Michael Ventura. There’s some good wisdom here for us today.
If we’re open to it, empathy can help us see the world through other lenses, expanding our frame of reference, and allowing us to make more well-rounded decisions. It’s hard, sometimes uncomfortable – especially when you don’t like what you hear.
Ventura offers up seven personas to support growing as an empathic leader. You will identify and feel more comfortable with some of these more than others. For the ones that aren’t comfortable for you, how can you start to use them more to stretch yourself as an empathic person & leader?
I continue to do 1:1 coaching and have some openings for evenings & weekends (pacific time). If you’d like to schedule a time, drop me a note.
